Cave Diving Courses – Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need previous cave diving experience to start a course?
No, prior cave diving experience is not required to begin the TDI Cavern Diver Course. However, you must be a certified Open Water Diver (or equivalent) and be at least 18 years old (or 15 with parental consent). Good buoyancy control and comfort in the water are essential for training in overhead environments.
What is the difference between Cavern, Intro to Cave, and Full Cave Diver courses?
- Cavern Diver: Teaches basic overhead environment skills while staying within sight of the entrance and natural light.
- Intro to Cave Diver: Allows limited penetration into caves beyond the daylight zone with stricter rules.
- Full Cave Diver: Provides full training in cave navigation, gas planning, staging, and emergency procedures.
What equipment do I need for cave diving?
Cave diving requires specialized equipment, including:
- Redundant air sources (such as doubles or sidemount)
- Primary and backup dive lights
- Safety reel and guideline tools
We will provide a detailed gear checklist for each course. Contact us to find out which equipment is already included in your course price.
Where are the cave diving courses conducted?
We conduct cave diving training in Florida (e.g., Peacock Springs, Ginnie Springs) and in Mexico’s Riviera Maya (cenotes like Dos Ojos, Tajma Ha). You can choose your training location depending on schedule and preferences.
Will I receive a certification after completing the course?
Yes. All of our cave diving courses follow TDI standards, and you will receive an official TDI e-certification card upon successful completion of each level.
How long does it take to get cave certified?
The duration depends on the certification level and your diving experience.
The TDI Cavern Diver Course typically takes 2–3 days, while the Intro to Cave Diver and Full Cave Diver courses each require an additional 2–4 days. You can complete the levels separately or combine them into an intensive multi-day training program based on your availability and comfort level.
How many dives do you need for cave diving?
Each cave diving course requires a specific number of training dives.
The TDI Cavern Diver Course includes a minimum of 4 dives, as do the Intro to Cave Diver and Full Cave Diver courses.
In addition to underwater training, a significant portion of each course is spent on land-based skill development, including equipment setup, guideline techniques, emergency procedures, and dive planning.
Some divers may require additional dives depending on their comfort and performance during training.
